Members of the Clear Lake Fencing Club and the Galveston Fencing Club will hold a memorial tournament in honor of the late Walter Jerome "Jerry" Dunaway. The tournament will be held Saturday, May 28, in the gym at the O'Connell College Preparatory School at 1320 23rd Street in Galveston.
The first event will begin at 8:30 AM. Fencing events will continue through the morning and early afternoon.
Spectators will be admitted free or charge.
The tournament was organized to expose students at the O'Connell School to the sport of fencing before the school year ended. Beginning next fall, the Galveston Fencing Club will provide fencing instruction to O'Connell students on Monday and Wednesday evenings after classes.
On May 4th, South Houston High School fencing coach Jerry Dunaway passed away following a battle with vascular illness. Dunaway had been a founding member of the Clear Lake Fencing Club in 1993. A year later, while teaching at South Houston High School he began an after class fencing club. In time it grew to include three classes per semester. A number of South Houston fencers have joined the Clear Lake Fencing Club following graduation.
The Galveston Fencing Club was founded in 1999 by Kenneth Shelton who initially joined and recruited assistance from the Clear Lake Fencing Club. Both clubs have maintained close relationships. Fencers from South Houston have been regular faces at tournaments held by both local clubs.
